Chrome-Dravite (M918)
Tanzania

LOCATION
Commander Mine, Nadonjukin, Manyara Reg., Tansania
SIZE
40 x 10 x 9 mm
DESCRIPTION
The Commander mine is located not far from the small village of Nadonjukin in Tanzania's Manyara region. The Manyara region is named after the lake of the same name and is located in central Tanzania, extending into the north of the country. The Kilimanjaro area is located slightly to the east. What is grandly referred to as a “mine” here is actually more of a hole in the ground – nevertheless, it is probably the best site for chrome dravite. Dravite is otherwise rather brown and, due to this color, not necessarily a particularly prized variety of tourmaline. However, enrichment with chrome gives it its intense green color. In the lower part of the crystal, the chromium saturation is less pronounced, giving it a brownish-yellow color. The surfaces are all highly lustrous, the crystal is very translucent and undamaged, and it weighs approximately 43 carats.
