Vesuvianite (M919)
Canada

LOCATION
Jeffrey Mine, Val-des-Sources, Estrie, Québec, Canada
SIZE
48 x 34 x 24 mm
DESCRIPTION
The Jeffrey Mine is considered one of the richest mineral deposits in the world. Originally, asbestos was mined here. Due to the toxicity of asbestos, it has not been used in the construction industry since around the 1980s. In 1996, in an attempt to mine a high-grade area at the bottom of the pit, another attempt was made to switch to underground methods, but government subsidies were exhausted in 2001, and since then the mine has been inactive. For collectors, the site is still of great importance today. In addition to its unique mineral wealth, it is known for what are probably the best grossulars and fantastic vesuvianites. This specimen consists of many smaller crystals intergrown with a horizontal main crystal that spans almost the entire width of the specimen and shows endpoints on both sides. The color is light green, and the surfaces show very good luster.
