Rhodochrosite (M1398)
Gabon
LOCATION
Moanda Mine, Moanda, Léboumbi-Leyou Department, Haut-Ogooué Province, Gabon
SIZE
61 x 37 x 27 mm
DESCRIPTION
Sharp terminated elongated scalenohedrons attached to dark grey matrix with even glossy faces, which show a very attractive texture. This is generally a very rare locality for Rhodochrosite and material is rare and hard to obtain. But crystals in this size came around 60 years ago and never again - they are up to around 10mm! Although Moanda mine is a large Manganese oxide deposit Rhodochrosite came in only little quantity, so even a sample is something exceptional, but this particular specimen is exceptional for Gabon.
