Tourmaline with Cleavelandite (1043)

Himalaya Mine, Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA

90 x 47 x 35 mm

The Himalaya mine is probably the most relevant locality for Tourmaline in North America. After the discovery in 1898 it produced gem Tourmaline during decades. Most available material is between 2 and 6cm, specially the smaller ones are good and clear enough for gem-stones. Larger crystals came rare and are even more difficult to acquire. Most larger crystals have one thing in common with specimen from Afghanistan - Colors often seem to be washed out - saturation is weak or tends to a less attractive tone of red, which always looks like a little bit dirty. Bi-colored crystals have the same problem with the green zonings - it is not a beautiful green, pale and more grey-green.

This crystal is different and belongs for sure to the very best quality for the locality. The crystal is razor sharp terminated and highly lustrous all around, no side is less attractive - I only choose this angle for photography to show the Cleavelandite, but Tourmaline itself is perfect and on same high quality all around. Also the color is remarkable - it is really a strong, intense red-pink color, the lower third shows an uncommon dark, strong olive-green color. Along the end-point you can see a thin, razor sharp mint-green zoning. The photo with dark background was done under artificial light with minor backlight - the photo with light background shows the specimen under daylight.

The Cleavelandite developed sharp, glossy and snowy white crystals and give the specimen more character than just a common single crystal. On one side you can see a few small lavender colored Lepidolite crystals on the faces of Tourmaline. I saw plenty of specimen from Himalaya, but not even a few in this size in union with luster, clarity and saturation. One perfect repair (if you don´t know where it is you would not even recognize it) is present, no damages to report.
